Survival is a very serious business, and while many people take basic precautions, not nearly enough have an automobile survival kit in their vehicle. This is definitely a shame, because many people every year end up in a survival situation because of a wrong turn, bad weather, or a car accident. There are many situations in which a person can find themselves in serious need of a little help because survival situations often strike suddenly and without warning. If you don’t already have one, you should seriously consider putting together an automobile survival kit for every vehicle you own.
The good news is that it’s not hard to put together an effective kit. There are just a couple main points to keep in mind, and if you ask yourself these two questions while trying to put a homemade basic survival kit together, they will guide you to setting up the most effective yet easily portable emergency kit you could hope for. Those two questions are:
- Does this item take care of one of the pillar needs for survival? (food, water, core temperature, signal)
- Can this item be used for more than one thing?
A few things that should be in every single car survival kit would include:
- Matches, flint and steel, and fire starters to help start a fire and keep warm. Fire can also keep local predators away, or get spotted by a rescue team.
- Iodine tablets to purify water. A tin, container, or unlubricated condom to carry water.
- Whistle, road flares, or signal mirror. Or all three.
- Fishing line, black garbage bag, and emergency thermal blanket. These all have multiple survival uses.
It’s also a good idea to have a knife and a first aid kit, as a knife is an all purpose tool while a first aid kit makes sense since you could be injured after an accident or while in the wild. Just keep these things in mind when putting together an emergency kit for your car and you’ll be set to go!
