How to Overcome Alcoholism through Action

There is a basic error in logic and thinking when it comes to alcoholism, and many people make the mistake of believing that beating an addiction is a passive process.  After all, you are simply trying to not do something.  The idea is to stop putting a chemical or substance into your body.  So it would stand to reason that this should be a fairly passive process.  The person should be giving something up in order to move beyond their addiction.  Easy, right?

Well of course we all know that it is not easy, and see that many intelligent people do struggle to figure out exactly how to stop drinking alcohol.  The reason that this process is so baffling to so many people is because it actually takes a great deal of action in order to successfully beat alcoholism.  It is an active process.  Overcoming any addiction is an act of creative energy.  It takes deliberate, purposeful effort each and every day.  Not only that, but it also takes sustained effort and sustained energy.

Many people also think that the key to knowing how to quit drinking is to take action, overcome the addiction, and then move on with your life.  In other words, they equate beating addiction with being an event.  But this is not the case, because the threat of relapse hangs over the head of the alcoholic every single day as a continuous threat.  Therefore, long term recovery is always an ongoing process, never a one-time event.  We are never cured from an addiction, and the key to success is continuous action.

What type of action is best for recovery?  Personal growth.  Holistic growth.  Pushing ourselves to grow and learn more as a person.  These are the concepts that have the power to keep an alcoholic sober in the long run.  But it all starts by taking action.
