A leaky garage roof can cause many future problems if it goes unchecked. It can weaken your garage’s structural framework in the long run, and this will mean you will have to prepare a large amount of money to cover the expense of repairing your roof. The best way to prevent spending too much is to do the fixing yourself. It might sound challenging at first, but it can be done. Here are a few tips on how to mend that stubborn hole in your garage roof.
The first thing to be done is to locate the exact position of the troublesome hole. This might take a while but it must be done. If your roof is made of shingles, you have to find the bad shingle that you need to replace, and if it is a flat one, you have to clear the entire rooftop of debris to be able to pinpoint the leaking part. Now, if your roof has shingles, after locating the bad one, remove it from its place and put a small amount of roofing cement on newly-exposed space. Then place a new shingle on it and secure it with nails.
If your roof is flat, you have to check first if the leaking part has no other damage to it. For example, the supporting wooden structure of your roof might have been damaged and might need replacement. You have to tend to this first before you can actually repair the bothersome hole. For shingled rooftops, the last thing to do is to apply a new coat of cement on the newly placed shingle. For flat rooftops, apply cement on the hole, and extend the application three or four inches away from the hole. For larger holes, cover them with roofing felt and attach it with nails. Then, coat it with a layer of cement.
